Navigation Skills

Find your way. Build confidence. Explore further.

Want to feel more confident heading out for a walk without relying on your phone?

Our Adult Navigation Skills sessions are practical, relaxed and designed to give you the confidence to plan and follow your own adventures.

Whether you've never properly used a map and compass, want to refresh skills you've forgotten, or simply want to become more independent outdoors, Edventures will help you develop skills you can actually use.

No previous navigation experience is needed.

Introduction to Navigation

A practical introduction to map reading and navigation.

Spend a day outdoors learning the essential skills needed to plan and follow your own walks with greater confidence.

We'll keep the group small, giving you plenty of opportunity to practise, ask questions and learn at a comfortable pace.

You'll learn how to:

  • Understand an Ordnance Survey map
  • Recognise map symbols and features
  • Understand contours and relate the map to the landscape
  • Orientate your map
  • Use grid references
  • Measure distance
  • Plan and follow a simple route
  • Use paths, boundaries and other features to navigate
  • Understand the basics of using a compass
  • Take and follow a compass bearing
  • Recognise when you've gone wrong
  • Relocate and get yourself back on track
  • Make sensible decisions when planning a day outdoors

Most importantly, you'll spend plenty of time actually navigating, rather than standing around listening to theory.

Who is it for?

Adults who want to become more confident and independent outdoors.

It's particularly suitable if you:

  • enjoy walking but normally follow somebody else
  • rely heavily on your phone for navigation
  • have bought a map and compass but aren't completely sure what to do with them
  • learnt navigation years ago and need a refresher
  • want more confidence exploring unfamiliar countryside
  • are beginning to explore hillwalking or other outdoor activities

Complete beginners are very welcome.

What makes an Edventures navigation day different?

Navigation doesn't need to feel technical or intimidating.

We'll learn by doing.

You'll make decisions, choose routes, navigate between features and occasionally get things wrong — because working out why you've gone wrong and how to recover is one of the best ways to become a confident navigator.

The aim isn't simply to teach you how to use a compass.

It's to give you the skills and confidence to start planning your own adventures.

Your next adventure starts with knowing where you're going.
